Church of Sound announced as new Associate Artist!

Church Of Sound is a central speaker tower, a ring of musicians exploring unheard territories, and a surrounding audience sharing in one-off happenings. The shared fantasy of a Hackney organist and a Parisian crate digger. In modern day London, where opportunity shrinks and rent swells, space needs to be reimagined & reclaimed. Closed-off vacuums spread through the city, denying communities their place: by promoting a philosophy of symbiotic dual-use, Church of Sound transforms St James into a one-night-only music venue unlike any other.

We managed to catch up with Church of Sound founder, Spencer Martin to find out what he’s been up to since the now infamous Hackney music night took off 18 months ago, very quickly picking up their first award at the 2017 Jazz FM Awards for Best Live Experience of the Year. Oh yeah…

Firstly, we’re super excited to welcome you on board as our new Associate Artist!

You’re not the only ones who are excited! I’m so, so happy to get involved with Abram Wilson Foundation. To say it’s an honour doesn’t quite cover it. It’s always been a dream of mine to convert Church of Sound into something more than just a wicked gig, and I feel that this partnership has the potential to truly develop it into something that can affect the lives of many more than those who just attend our shows.

What are you currently working on?

Well, as I’m sure is the case with most people in this line of work, I’m certainly a jack of all, master of none type. So right now I run Church of Sound and DJ a monthly Church of Sound show on Worldwide FM. I’m also a Church Organist, Venue Manager at Total Refreshment Centre and frequently moonlight as a handyman.

If you could change one thing about London what would it be?

Well that’s a massive question! One thing… somehow I would like to democratise availability, of space, of supplies, of opportunity. But that’s one hell of a big thing. Smarter people than me often talk of Universal Basic Income being a route towards this.

What’s your tune of the moment?

A tricky one for any head. I would have to say Escape by Rupert Holmes, better known as The Piña Colada Song. Sounds like a joke but I assure you the groove on that track is second to none.

What’s on the Church of Sound horizon?

Plenty of work! In the coming year we hope to expand our connections to Paris and Berlin, begin releasing some of our recording archive and of course, develop our partnership with the Abram Wilson Foundation. BIG!

Any artists we should be keeping an eye on?

Yo, heads up on this one. Kuu-50, Maxwell Owin, Collocutor, Hello Skinny all got big things in the pipeline this year. Just a few of the many names that one could choose. Also The Comet is Coming have new music, which I believe is scheduled for release this year, OHHH!
