PHILIPPA (AKA ADVENTURES IN BLACK AND WHITE)
Charismatic New Orleans trumpeter and vocalist Abram Wilson debuts original music inspired by the life of the Harlem born, mix raced classical piano prodigy, Philippa Schuyler. Wilson and his band of hard-hitting musicians will explore new compositional ground with music ranging from the roughest blues to the most melodic swing. Expect trumpet playing complete with beauty in tone complemented by stunning vocals as Wilson tells the sensitive story of an extraordinary and gifted musician’s troubled life. A combintation of music and story-telling will convey a woman presented with obstacles beyond her control from heartache to racism. Philippa promises to pierce the soul and melt the heart.

THE TRUMPET KINGS: A TRIBUTE TO FREDDIE HUBBARD, LEE MORGAN AND WOODY SHAW
Abram Wilson delves into the jazz tradition as he presents Trumpet Kings, a performance featuring recordings by the great Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan and Woody Shaw. Expect to see Wilson along with a sensational rhythm section performing well known selections from their jazz repertoire. Join Abram in a rare opportunity that’s up close and personal in a night that will swing like the original kings before him.

RUNNING WITH THE FLAME
Abram Wilson will burn up the UK jazz scene with an incredible septet featuring special guest artists Jean Toussaint, Pete King and Winston Rollins celebrating the London 2012 Olympic Games. Wilson presents traditional folk songs in a jazz style while emphasising the themes of spirituality, injustice, and love – the three subjects understood throughout our five inhabited continents. In addition to melody, rhythmic concepts, and the use of various harmonic scales, the representation of well known instruments within certain cultures will be explored. The music will inspire the audience to search for their own heritage while at the same time experiencing the culture of others.

LIFE PAINTINGS AND SINGING PICTURES
Abram’s quartet performs two extraordinary sets comprising of his latest album, Life Paintings, and a collaborative effort featuring brand new compositions inspired by young artist, Sheila Maurice-Grey entitled Singing Pictures. Life Paintings is a collection of stories from Abram’s life which tells of youthful innocence, passion, betrayal and courage. The stories are told through the instrumental voices of acoustic swing and the blues with Abram’s trumpet taking centre stage. Singing Pictures brings both jazz and art together as Sheila and Abram offer their audience both the aural and visual elements of Sheila’s innovative and unique work. These new original tunes see Abram presenting acoustic jazz music featuring his trumpet along with bass, drums, and piano.
This event promises to be an eye opening musical interpretation of Wilson’s journey from New Orleans to London and a young woman’s experience of maintaining her own cultural identity.
